Artist Bio:
Benny Melton was born in South Dakota and grew up in Mississippi. He attended Mississippi public
schools before entering college in the fall of 1976 at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS where he
received his first formal art lessons. Benny declared as an art major and later transferred to Mississippi
College but soon left college (fall 1980) to pursue an opportunity in chemical manufacturing. He
returned to school in 2003 and completed requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Business
Management (December 2005) from Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. A new job assignment
took him back to his home state of South Dakota where he was employed in a corporate sales position
in nearby Sioux City, Iowa. Five years later, he returned to Mississippi and resumed his path in Art
graduating in 2014 with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Mississippi.
Benny enjoyed teaching Art at the University of Mississippi, Memphis College of Art, and a one-year stint
teaching art at Yazoo City High School. Teaching and manufacturing backgrounds were finally combined
in Benny’s current job as training coordinator at C.F. Industries, Inc. in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
Artist Statement:
I like listening to stories almost as much as telling them. My paintings are essentially loosely painted
stories that begin somewhere in the middle of things.
