About the Bentonia Blues Festival

The Bentonia Blues Festival began in 1972 on a farm, just up the road from the world-famous Blue Front Cafe, on land owned by the Holmes family. It was a tiny event, with only one D.J. and Walter “Big Daddy” Hood (“500 lbs. of Blues”) performing a capella. The location of the festival was moved into downtown Bentonia, Mississippi in 2006. Since that time, the festival has grown from an attendance of a couple hundred to ten thousand in recent years, prompting the festival to be moved back to the original location on the Holmes farm. The festival has attracted blues performers and fans from far and wide.

“When I started this festival in 1972, it was to help preserve the Bentonia style of blues, which is unique to this area. I knew then that it would be a great event, but I never knew it would be as big as it is now,” says Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, owner of the Blue Front Cafe and creator of the Bentonia Blues Festival. “The fact that so many people have become aware of this music and want to celebrate it every year with us here in Bentonia really warms my heart. Every year we have people here from a different country or state that’s never been before. The Bentonia blues is still alive, and it’s right here.”

The 2019 Bentonia Blues Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, and will be an all-day event back on the Holmes’ Farm at 313 Wilson-Holmes Road, Bentonia, MS! Additional events will be held throughout the week starting on June 10th at the Blue Front Cafe in downtown Bentonia, Mississippi.

Blues Festival Guide

  1. I understand if I am too late but I would love to be a vendor in the craft show this year. If any spots are available at all please give me at call at 601-407-8999. I live in Canton Ms and I have a business called The Old Rugged Crosses and Designs By Amber. I make hand made wooden crosses, frames, shadow boxes, wind chimes, refinish window panes and a lot of other antique and distressed items. I would love to be able to show and sell my items at this event. Even if I am stuck in a corner somewhere hopefully there is some type of room left! Thank you so much!

    Amber Isonhood

    • Thank you for your post, Amber. You will need to contact Mr. Holmes at 662-528-1900 to arrange vending. We hope to see you there! 🙂

  2. I would like to know the dates of the Bentonia Blues Festival for 2015 and confirm that Billy Davis (Bluesman Extraordinaire born in Bentonia) will be performing at this event. I am also interested in performing at this venue.

    • Bentonia Blues Festival is held annually on the 3rd Saturday in June, so that would be June 20th 2015. We do not have line-up information. For information on line-up, you’ll need to contact Mr. Holmes at 662-528-1900. Thanks for your post. 🙂

  3. Hi am a representative from BlueSouth Entertainment. we are a booking agency for blues artist. I would like to request information about festival requirements for inquiring artist.

  4. We were there 2013 on our motorcycles and plan on coming this year in our RVs. Can we park there around the Juke Joint for the weekend? Looking forward to it. Duck will remember us.

    • Thanks for your post, Shelley. I am not sure that there will be any RV parking available at the Blue Front Cafe that weekend. Duck may have some space that I don’t know about, though. I’ll check with him and post if I hear for sure, but in the mean time you are welcome to call him at 662-528-1900

Yazoo County is home to several RV sites, so if this doesn’t work out, be sure to check out our list on this website. There are two which are within 10 miles of the Blue Front Cafe.

  5. Is it possible to add a 5K run/walk race to 2015 Bentonia Blues Festival events? Thanks

    • Thank you for your post. The festival is produced by Mr. Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, owner of the Blue Front Cafe and founder of the Bentonia Blues Festival. Give him a call at 662-528-1900 to discuss this idea.

  6. Hi! I’m an independent distributor for ItWorks!, a health and wellness company and wanted information about possibly being a vendor! Has anyone else with our company signed up? I saw the post about contacting Mr. Holmes for vending. Does he have an email address? I’m at work so email is best! Thanks!

  7. Is there any live music on Tuesday night June 16. If so, until what time?

    • Yes, there has been live music every night since Sunday, June 14th. Mr. Holmes will have the Blue Front Cafe open every night leading up to the Festival. We do not know any times or performers except for Friday night (June 19), when we know that Deebs Blues (Adib Sabir) from Canton, MS, will perform during the free food giveaway that we are hosting.

The Blue Front Cafe is an authentic juke joint, open since 1948 almost every day. In an authentic juke joint, there are no schedules. We certainly hope you will enjoy the experience, and we hope to see you there. 🙂

  8. Who can I email for artist submissions for the festival?

  9. HI where can we get accommodation when the festival is on? Coming over from England to enjoy the blues as it should be,
    Jake & Lizzie.

    • Howdy, Jake & Lizzie. Thanks so much for your post! The festival is actually going to have RV and camping spaces available for the event, if that is something you are interested in. Arrangements can be made by calling Mr. Holmes at 662-528-1900 or Michael at 504-717-1782 – If that’s not what you’re interested in, there are several hotels in Yazoo City just 15 minutes to the north of Bentonia. A list of those is available at

We look forward to seeing you in Yazoo County! 🙂
