The Legend of the Witch of Yazoo

The Witch of Yazoo Located in the middle of the historic section of Glenwood Cemetery, Yazoo City’s public cemetery, is a grave surrounded by chain links known as, “The Witch’s Grave”. The legend of the Witch of Yazoo became famous in Willie Morris’ book, Good Old Boy published in 1971. This story is an example of the unusual folklore surrounding Yazoo County. Many have pointed out that the grave and the legend were there long before Morris was born, and that the chain had been broken for a long time. According to the legend, the old woman lived on the Yazoo River, and was caught torturing fishermen who she lured in off the river.  The sheriff is said to have chased her through the swamps where she was half drowned in quicksand by the time the sheriff caught up with her.  As she was sinking, she swore her revenge on

YAZOO COUNTY TOURISM RECOGNIZES BEST AND BRIGHTEST IN THE COUNTY’S INDUSTRY Yazoo City, Miss. Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Veterans’ Day Parade on Saturday, November 7, 2015. Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting

Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting The 93rd annual meeting and banquet of the Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce is Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 6pm at the McCoy Elementary School Cafeteria.  World Champion turkey caller and entertaining outdoors speaker Preston Pittman has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman. On Nov. 21 he will be appearing in Yazoo City at the Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. Tickets are just $25 for an individual, with corporate tables available for $250, and include the evening’s meal.  Corporate tables and sponsors will enjoy a meet & greet with Preston.  The evening will also include a silent auction and door prizes.
